Murray River Council residents are reminded to mark their calendars for the NSW Local Government elections on December 4, as they will be required to vote on a referendum question.

With the nomination period now closed, Murray River Council will have 7 candidates elected uncontested, however residents will still need to turn out to vote in a referendum on whether to abolish the council’s three wards.

Specifically, residents will vote on a question asking if they wish to ‘remove the three wards currently in place (Moama, Greater Wakool and Greater Murray with three Councillors elected within each ward) to become an undivided Local Government Area.’

Voting in the referendum is compulsory for all those on the electoral role in Murray River Council.

In regards to councillor representation, Moama Ward received 3 nominations, filling all vacant seats.

Both Greater Wakool and Greater Murray Wards received 2 nominations, leaving a vacant seat in each.

Council will be required to hold a by-election next year to fill the 2 vacant councillor positions.

Murray River Council residents are encouraged to check their voting options for the NSW Local Government elections with all voters now eligible to vote before election day and expanded eligibility for postal voting.
