New Green Lid Kerbside Bin Subsidy Policy for MRC

Murray River Council have adopted a new FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) Green Lid Kerbside Bin Subsidy Policy at its ordinary meeting of council this week.

The new policy will now replace the previous Green Waste Subsidy Policy which was introduced to assist in alleviating the costs associated with the introduction of the green-lid bins in Mathoura and Moama.

Murray River Council Mayor, Cr Chris Bilkey said the new policy is in place to reflect the changes to the service, including an eventual council-wide expansion of the service and the impending introduction of food organics collection to the program.

“Whilst the green waste initiative is an important step in diverting waste from landfill, we acknowledge that there will also be concerns that arise regarding the associated collection fee to the ratepayer.”

“Whilst every household can make use of the food organics collection, a number of residents with small gardens or no gardens at all may find that they have little use for the garden waste service.”

“With this in mind, the policy will help address the cost associated with the service which will be evaluated based on individual circumstances,” he said.

Eligible ratepayers will be able to apply for a fifty percent reduction of the annual fee for their FOGO green lid bin, which will be assessed on a merit-based, case-by-case basis.

The new policy will cover the current 2020/21 financial year.
