Moama Cemetery

In the 1970’s the former Murray Shire Council took over the management of the Moama Cemetery from the Cemetery Trust. As a result of extensive research, it has been found that the Deniliquin Court House holds records of interments at the Moama Cemetery dating back to 1858, with a Mr George Davis being the first interment at the Cemetery.

In 1978, Council constructed the first lawn cemetery component, which was positioned in the northern section of the site. This was further expanded through to a central arc in 1998. In addition to the lawn cemeteries, Council also constructed a set of memorial walls and two rose gardens where the interment of cremated remains can be placed.

In 2010, Council constructed a new lawn section (Lawn Area Three) to the west of the site which is currently being utilised for both burial and cremated remains interments. The Moama Cemetery has a demonstrated heritage value for Moama and the community in which it is situated. The cemetery is a living monument that has a major historical significance for our past, present and future by contributing to our understanding of local history.

The cemetery location is unique due to the manner in which the Moama community has developed and expanded. Originally, the cemetery was located on what would have been the extremity of the town. However, as the Moama Township has expanded to the northwest and the future direction being the same, the cemetery is now positioned centrally within the community.

Vehicle access information

Vehicle access for burials, monumental masons, visitors and maintenance staff into the cemetery is from the Perricoota Road and Kirchhofer Road intersection. This access leads directly into the public carpark off which an internal access road parallel to Perricoota Road leads to the central area of the cemetery. This allows direct access to the burial sections for funeral directors, monumental masons and maintenance staff.
