Murray River Council is inviting Barham residents to share their experiences and records from recent flood and storm events to help update the Barham Flood Study.

The review will build on existing Murray River flood modelling completed in 2014 and 2017, and for the first time, include local stormwater modelling of the catchments around Barham. The updated models will be calibrated using data from the 2016 and 2022 Murray River floods, as well as the significant local storm events on 25 December 2023 and 8 January 2024.

Murray River Council mayor, John Harvie said community input is vital to ensure the updated study accurately reflects the way flooding and drainage issues occur in Barham.

“We know local knowledge and lived experience can fill important gaps in the data.”

“By sharing photos, videos, and observations, residents can help us improve flood risk planning and response activities in the future.”

Council has engaged Water Technology to deliver the study, which will enhance understanding of both riverine and local runoff flooding. The information will support improved emergency management, land use planning and infrastructure decisions.

Council is requesting community photos, videos, or records from the 2016, 2022, 25 December 2023, and 8 January 2024 events, or details of stormwater and drainage issues in town.

Residents are encouraged to share their information via Council’s Your Say platform: yoursay.murrayriver.nsw.gov.au

The community is also invited to a community drop-in session, where they can find out more about the review, or offer feedback or relevant local photos and information.

The submission period closes 23 September, 2025.
