Heritage Advisory Service

Council operates a FREE heritage advisory service for people proposing works on heritage buildings within the Murray River Council, in urban, rural and commercial areas.

Professional advice van be provided on things such as:

  • Repainting (colour schemes)
  • Renovations
  • Restorations
  • Signage
  • Fencing
  • Maintenance
Why use this service?

If you are contemplating major or minor changes to an older style building, you can receive:

  • Free preliminary architectural and building advice to give direction to your project.
  • Assistance with the preparation of information, for your submission to Council seeking approval.
  • Help in identifying the priorities for your project.
Examples of what the advisor can offer.

Business Owners: Free advice on colours, signage, materials, designs of main street shopfronts, veranda restorations and streetscapes before you lodge a Development Application. Maintenance advice on older buildings and help with technical issues, rising damp, etc.

Home Renovators: Free advice on building styles, for renovation and extensions to older homes, or new ones in older areas. Advice on colours, materials and maintenance. Note that this service is not intended to replace normal design or architectural services.

Community Organisations: Help in applying for heritage funding. Advice on restoration and maintenance of your building. Finding suitable tradespeople.

Builders and Tradespeople: Help choosing products suitable for heritage work, e.g. appropriate designs for particular period styles. Technical advice on suitable materials and techniques for conservation works. Assistance with heritage colour schemes.

Designers: Pre-development advice on designs for period buildings or new buildings in older areas. Liaising with Council over heritage related development issues.


How do I make an appointment?

For any heritage issues, you should make an appointment by calling Council’s Planning Department on 1300 087 004 or email admin@murrayriver.nsw.gov.au.

The heritage adviser only visits every couple of months, so make your booking early.
