Council is calling for input into new Disability Inclusion Action Plan

Murray River Council is inviting the community to help shape its next Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), which will guide actions to improve access and inclusion across the region over the next four years.

The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines the practical steps Council will take to improve access to services, facilities, events, public spaces and information for people with a disability.

Mayor, Cr John Harvie said the process helps council to make small but meaningful changes in the disability space.

“Disability inclusion action planning is a way that governments can work towards reducing and removing barriers for people with disability and create a more accessible environment in the local area,” he said.

“We know the best way to understand the barriers people experience is by listening directly to our community, so I encourage people to share their ideas and experiences with our team.”

As part of the plan's development, Council is seeking feedback from residents, people with disability, support workers, families, community organisations and businesses to better understand what is working well, what barriers still exist and where improvements can be made.

Barriers may include physical access, communication, attitudes or the systems and processes people experience when interacting with Council.

There are several ways for the community to get involved, including completing an online survey, attending a community workshop or visiting one of Council's pop-up consultation sessions.

The community workshop, facilitated by lived-experience consultants, will be held on Wednesday 22 July from 10.00am to 12.00pm at Campaspe Library, 310 Hare Street, Echuca.

Community members can also speak with Council staff at:

Moama Marketplace – Tuesday 21 July, 10.00am to 1.00pm.
Barham IGA – Thursday 23 July, 10.00am to 1.00pm.

Feedback received will help Council identify practical actions to include in the plan.

Under NSW legislation, councils are required to review and update their Disability Inclusion Action Plans every four years.
