Murray River Council is calling on the Mathoura and Picnic Point community to share their experiences and observations of past flood and storm events, as part of a new flood study for the area.

The new Mathoura and Picnic Point Flood Study will update and extend flood modelling of the Murray River and local stormwater drainage systems.

Building on previous modelling of the Barmah-Millewa Forest, it will cover the floodplain from Tocumwal downstream to the Bama Sandhills on the Murray River, and to Deniliquin on the Edwards River.

Murray River Council mayor, Cr John Harvie said community contributions would be vital in creating accurate and reliable models.

“Locals know their area better than anyone. Whether it’s a photo from the 2016 flood, a video from a recent storm, or knowledge of where water tends to pool, these details help us fine-tune the models and improve our understanding of flood behaviour,” Cr Harvie said.

The models will be calibrated to major historical flood events, including the 2010, 2016 and 2022 Murray River floods, as well as recent storms that have caused drainage issues in Mathoura and Picnic Point.

Council is encouraging the community to:

  • Provide photos, videos or personal observations from the 2010, 2016, and 2022 floods
  • Share experiences of local storms that caused drainage or flooding problems
  • Identify known stormwater drainage problem areas

Residents are encouraged to share their information via Council’s Your Say platform: yoursay.murrayriver.nsw.gov.au

The community is also invited to a community drop-in session, where they can find out more about the review, or offer feedback or relevant local photos and information.
