Murray River Council has endorsed the Draft Local Housing Strategy (LHS) Revision for public exhibition and is inviting the community to have their say.

Mayor, Cr John Harvie said the revised Strategy responds to significant population growth across the local government area, particularly in Moama, and provides a clearer plan for future housing needs.

“Our community is growing, and it’s essential we plan ahead to ensure housing supply, infrastructure and services keep pace, both now and into the future.”

“This revised Strategy gives council and the community a stronger, evidence-based framework to manage growth in a coordinated and sustainable way.”

The Draft LHS Revision has been prepared in response to feedback from Council, NSW Government agencies and industry stakeholders that the 2023 Strategy lacked clear growth outcomes and policy direction.

“The updated draft sets out where growth should occur, how it should be staged, and the type of housing we need to support a diverse and changing population,” Cr Harvie said.

“It also provides clearer guidance for developers and landowners while ensuring decisions align with Council’s long-term strategic priorities.”

Key elements of the Draft Local Housing Strategy Revision include:

  • Updated population and dwelling projections to 2046, with Moama identified as the main growth area.
  • A clearer framework for where and how future housing should be delivered, with a focus on consolidating development around existing townships.
  • Staging plans for Moama and key towns to guide orderly growth and infrastructure delivery.
  • Policy direction to support housing diversity, affordability and age-friendly design.
  • Guidance for assessing rezoning requests and development proposals to ensure they align with strategic priorities.
  • Integration of infrastructure, environmental constraints and cross-border growth considerations.

The draft Strategy has been informed by extensive consultation with NSW Government agencies, the development sector, local stakeholders and previous community feedback. It also highlights opportunities to work with neighbouring Victorian councils to better coordinate land supply and growth.

“We’re encouraging residents, businesses and stakeholders to review the draft and provide feedback,” Cr Harvie said

The revised draft Strategy and project background, along with an online submission portal is available via council’s Your Say Platform: yoursay.murrayriver.nsw.gov.au

Submissions close 8 February.

Once the public exhibition period closes, all feedback will be reviewed before a final version is presented to Council for adoption.
