An updated suite of draft Code of Conduct Policies has been adopted at Murray River Council’s September meeting.

Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) Council must review and update the Code of Conduct and Code of Meeting Practice Policies within 12 months of an election.

The policies - which cover Councillors, Employees and Committee – will be on display for public comment for 28 days.

The adopted codes are based on the Model Code of Conduct– prescribed by the NSW Office of Local Government - which aims to ensure there are procedures in place to promote transparency and accountability in council operations.

Murray River Council mayor, Cr Chris Bilkey said the policies assists to uphold the integrity of all those involved with council.

“The Code covers everything from bullying, conflict of interest, complaint processes and much more.”

“As much as anything else, it’s a guide to civility, respect and common sense for councillors, staff and those on committees of council too,” he said.

Council also adopted an updated draft Code of Meeting Practice at its same meeting, which covers the framework for conducting council meetings and included additional reference to the use of audio-visual links and online meetings.

The draft policies will be available for viewing on council’s website.
