Goodnight Landfill will permanently close in October 2023

The Goodnight Landfill site is permanently closing.

Cleanaway’s contract to run the Goodnight Waste Facility will come to an end in early October.  Council will not be renewing this contract and will be closing the facility.

This means Sunday October 1 will be the last operating day at the site prior to the closure.

Reasons behind the closure

In line with Murray River Council’s Waste Management Strategy adopted in 2019, the waste facility in Goodnight will be permanently closed from October 4 2023. Cleanaway’s contract with Council will conclude on this date with no further renewals planned for the continued operation of the site.

The Goodnight waste facility, currently open for three hours each Sunday, has seen minimal usage over time. This limited utilisation means the facility averages less than one customer per opening day. Moreover, the facility’s remote location, coupled with its restricted opening hours, presents significant challenges in terms of staffing and resourcing.

Economic considerations also played a key role in this decision. This relates to costs to cover staffing, skip bin hire, green waste processing, and the management of recoverable items. All on top of general site management. These costs, coupled with the sparse customer base and minimal income generated, render the facility operationally unsustainable.

Other options:

We will continue to build-on services in more central locations where we can offer efficient and cost-effective waste management solutions for residents. Koraleigh, located 22km from Goodnight and 14.5km from Tooleybuc, is strategically positioned to cater to the waste disposal needs of the surrounding areas, including Goodnight, Tooleybuc, Mallan, Speewa, Dilpurra, and Murray Downs.

Residents of Goodnight and Tooleybuc will continue to have access to kerbside waste services, offering them an additional avenue to manage their waste. Furthermore, the availability of skip bin services from Swan Hill provides a convenient alternative for residents who don’t want to travel to other sites.

Or, residents may like to utilise transfer stations and landfills in centres where they travel for general shopping and goods.

Whilst we appreciate this is a change to the operation of a long-standing facility, Council is committed to working alongside Cleanaway to ensure a smooth transition during this closure.

Following the closure, the site will be rehabilitated as part of Council’s 10-year capital plan.
