Murray River Council operates a weekly kerbside bin service for the collection of domestic waste.

About general waste collection

Your red-lid bin is for waste that is not reusable or recyclable and ends up buried in landfill.

This means sorting your waste correctly is vitally important as it ensures we can recover more resources!

See below for what you can and can’t put in your general waste bin.

Items you can place in your general waste bin

  • Baby food pouches
  • Bottle lids (smaller than a credit card)
  • Broken crockery
  • Cable, cords and rope
  • Chip packets
  • Cigarette butts
  • All disposable nappies including compostable options
  • All wipes (keep wipes out of our pipes!)
  • Fabric
  • Loose soft plastics (eg cling wrap and plastic bags)
  • Meat and biscuit trays
  • String/twine
  • Takeaway coffee cups and lids
  • Laminated paper and stickers
  • Plastic straws, plates & cutlery
  • Waxed paper and cardboard

Items not to be placed in your general waste bin

  • Car / household batteries
  • Scrap metal
  • Car / auto parts
  • Gas bottles
  • Hot ashes
  • Motor oil
  • Building materials or concrete
  • Garden waste or recyclables
  • Hazardous materials (e.g. asbestos, chemicals, paint,)
  • Medical waste

What if my bin is missed or damaged?

Please phone our customer service team on 1300 087 004 to arrange for a bin repair or report a missed collection.

 

 

Tips for bin collection

  • Put your bins out the night before collection or prior to 6am on collection day and place them at least 30cm apart.
  • Make sure your bins are completely closed.
  • Don’t place rocks or items on the bin lids. 
  • Make sure your bins are at least 1m away from parked vehicles, trailers or caravans which maybe parked on the street or nature strip
  • Make sure your bins are more than 1m away from trees, street lights, power poles, or other items which may hang over the road.
  • Don't overfill your bins - they won’t be collected! Keep their weight to less than 70kg. Think along the lines of ‘if I can pull it easily then it’s not too heavy’
  • Don't place items next to the bin or anywhere else along the nature strip. It is illegal dumping.
