Interested in running for Murray River Council election?

With election day for the 2021 NSW Local Government Elections now happening in December, Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey is encouraging local residents to consider nominating.

Cr Bilkey said the election is a great opportunity for those keen to make a difference in their local area.

"Local Government is the area where people with a strong sense of community can really make an impact.”

"Councillors represent the needs, wants and aspirations of their local community and make important decisions on behalf of their residents.”

“I’d certainly encourage anyone passionate about what happens in our area or wanting to make a positive impact on decision-making processes to nominate,” he said.

This year’s election, now to be held on December 4, will be only the second time a group of councillors will be sworn in at Murray River Council since being formed through amalgamation in 2016.

With 9 councillor positions up for grabs, Cr Bilkey said a robust pool of candidates is needed to ensure a good cross-section of local voices.

"Local residents know their local community, understand what's needed and the importance of a local voice in decision making.”

“It would be great for all our communities to have solid representation from right across the council footprint in this year’s election,” he said.

For those reluctant to put their hand up due to being unsure of what is involved, the NSW Electoral Commission website has a range of information and support material.

“With the extra time now before the election, it’s a great opportunity to have a look at all the electoral information available to make sure you are fully informed of the nomination processes and all the areas in between.”

“I’d encourage people to jump online and take a look at all the information now prior to the nomination period - and then get nominating!” Cr Bilkey said. 

Key dates for candidates include:

• Candidate nominations open on Monday 25 October 2021
• Closing of nominations on Wednesday 3 November 2021
• NSW Local Government Election Day on 4 December 2021
