Levee assessments taking place in Moulamein

Murray River Council has commenced a review of local Flood Studies and Management plans, with Moulamein township first on the list.

As part of the review council contractors will be in Moulamein over the next couple of weeks undertaking on-the-ground assessments to help inform updates to the studies and subsequent mitigation options.

Council’s Director Infrastructure, Jack Bond said the previous Moulamein Flood Study was undertaken in 2019, prior to the 2022 floods.

“The 2022 flood is noted as the highest flood on record for the Moulamein area, and we want to ensure the information presented in the updated flood study captures this record flood data.”  

Local residents may see contractors around the town undertaking inspections and surveys of the levees.

Access to properties with levees will be required in some instances, with residents notified via mail.

“Flood plans and ongoing investigations are vital in our area offering flood modelling information relevant to land use planning, flood management planning, emergency response and flooding education, so we appreciate the community’s patience as we gather this latest lot of data” Mr Bond said.

These investigations are also supporting future upgrade works on the Moulamein Water Treatment Ring Levee, Riverine/Stormwater backflow prevention and upgrades to points of weakness in the levee system.
